Methodist/Pre-Ministry Scholarships

 

UNITED METHODIST SCHOLARSHIPS

A number of both need and merit based scholarships are available through a variety of Methodist organizations. Each award has its own eligibility requirements and deadlines, so be sure to contact the Financial Aid Office with any questions.

Southwestern University United Methodist Scholarships

Amount: Variable
Application deadline: May 1

Students who are awarded any of these scholarships and who also receive need-based financial aid will have this scholarship incorporated into their need-based financial aid package in accordance with federal and state regulations and university policy. These are competitive scholarships and the recipients will be selected from the pool of applicants for the scholarship. We anticipate that the pool of applicants will exceed the number of available scholarships. All applicants will be notified of their final status in writing by June 30th.

General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) Scholarships 

An online scholarship application must be submitted directly to GBHEM in order to be considered for the J.A. Knowles Memorial Scholarship and the United Methodist Scholarshipwhich were formerly awarded through the Southwestern University United Methodist Scholarship Application.

Amount: Variable
Application deadline: March 1

J. A. Knowles Memorial Scholarship – $500 to $5,000 for one year

Candidates must be a full-time degree seeking student at Southwestern, and must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Applicants must file a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need. Requires a minimum gpa of 2.5 to be considered.

United Methodist Scholarship – $500 to $5,000 for one year

Candidates must be a full-time degree seeking student at Southwestern, and must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Requires a minimum gpa of 2.5 to be considered. Applicants must be an active, full member of the United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.  

United Methodist Higher Education Foundation

United Methodist Dollars for Scholars – $3000 to $4000 for one year

Candidates must be a full-time degree seeking student at Southwestern. Requires a minimum gpa of 2.5 to be considered. Applicants must be an active, full member of the United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.  

PRE-MINISTERIAL SCHOLARSHIP

 

Pre-Ministerial Scholarship 

Amount:  Up to $10,000 per year
Application Deadline:  May 1

Pre-Ministerial Scholarships are available for students who plan to enter full-time ministry and participation in the Southwestern Pre-Ministry Connection organized by the University Chaplain.  Candidates should speak with the University Chaplain prior to submitting a Pre-Ministerial Scholarship application.

J. Charles Merrill Peace and Justice Scholarship

Amount: $3,000 for one year
Application Deadline: May 1

For this scholarship, preference will be given to students who have completed at least two years of full-time enrollment, are pre-ministerial students, and/or who have demonstrated interest in activities or occupations which promote peace and justice locally, nationally or globally. Furthermore, preference may be given to students who are members of the United Methodist Church.
