ENDOWMENTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
The J.S. Abercrombie Faculty Enrichment Fund: Established by the J.S. Abercrombie Foundation to provide faculty salary support in curriculum enrichment.
The Lulu D. Ames Sociology Fund: By the estate of Lulu D. Ames to support and further the Department of Sociology.
The J.S. Bridwell Foundation: The Board of Trustees directed the establishment of this endowment fund for maintaining Mood-Bridwell Hall.
The Brown Challenge Endowment: Established through the generosity of The Brown Foundation, Inc., the Brown Challenge matched alumni gifts to the University between 1975-1995 to encourage increased alumni participation in the annual fund, and to help build the unrestricted endowment.
The Brown Foundation, Inc. Program for Progress Matching Endowment: Established through the generosity of The Brown Foundation, Inc. this endowment provided matching funds during the Program for Progress campaign completed in 1975.
The Cullen Faculty Endowment: Established for the purpose of faculty enrichment and development by the Cullen Foundation in 1981.
Cody Memorial: A fund raised to partially endow a Chair in Mathematics in honor of the late Dr. C.C. Cody, former professor of mathematics and dean of the college.
Arthur Vining Davis Foundations Endowment: Established by the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations in 1989 to develop a permanent Asian Studies curriculum.
Forest E. Dudley Memorial: Established by Mrs. Forest Dudley in 1976 for general endowment purposes.
The Gene Eanes Memorial Library Fund: By Mr. and Mrs. William R. Eanes, Georgetown. The income is used to purchase books for Cody Memorial Library.
The Fleming Scholar in Residence Program in Religion: Established by St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Houston, in honor of former President and Mrs. Durwood Fleming.
The Pauline and J.C. Fleming Endowment: An endowment fund created under the will of the late J.C. Fleming of Lubbock, to establish an endowment for excellence “to strengthen the academic program.”
The Fondren Fund: A general endowment fund created by Mrs. Ella H. Fondren of Houston, by annual gifts made during the administration of the late President J.N.R. Score.
The Ford Foundation: Two separate gifts by The Ford Foundation invested for a period of years with revenues used in support of salaries of the teaching staff. At the end of a fixed period of time, both principal and income may be used for any institutional purpose.
Global Citizens Fund: Established in 1979 by Mr. and Mrs. W. Everett DuPuy for the study and promotion of global affairs.
The John I. and Thelma Lynn Guion Endowment Fund: Established in 1996 by the estate of the late Thelma Lynn Guion, this fund supports the purchase of books and other materials to support the curriculum and enrich the lives of students in the School of Fine Arts and The Brown College of Arts and Sciences.
Harrison Club: Established in 1907 by Dr. J.E. Harrison and others for general endowment purposes.
The William B. Jones Faculty Fellowship Fund: Established in 1999 through the generous philanthropy of alumni, colleagues, staff and friends in honor of William B. Jones, professor emeritus of history, executive vice president emeritus and holder of the John H. Duncan Chair, to support faculty scholarship, research or other creative activity.
The Isla Kinsolving Kurth Fund: A general endowment fund for the support of the School of Fine Arts, given by the late Ernest L. Kurth, trustee, of Keltys, Texas, in honor of his wife, the former Isla Kinsolving.
Augustine Kerr Lokey and Clarence Walter Lokey Trust: Income from this trust to assist in funding the University’s International Studies Program.
Zada Maxwell Lokey and Clarence W. Lokey Endowment Fund for International Studies: The income from this fund is used for the International Studies Program.
Woodie McCook Fund for the Clinic: A fund created in 1948 by friends of Dr. and Mrs. I.J. McCook, Sr., in memory of their son, Woodie.
The William A. McMichael Enrichment Fund: Established in 2001 through the estate of Sue Mood McMichael, Class of 1923, to support faculty and student enrichment.
The R.M. Medley Memorial: Various donors contributed to a fund to furnish the Medley Room in the Sid Richardson Physical Education Center. Gift income exceeded expenditures and an endowment of $5,000 was established for “maintenance of the Medley Memorial Room.”
Mundy Faculty Fellowship Fund: Established by Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Mundy, Jr., for one or more faculty fellowships a year to provide enrichment and renewal opportunities for faculty members in addition to normal opportunities for sabbatical leave.
Virginia L. O’Hara Endowment: An unrestricted bequest from the estate of Virginia L. O’Hara.
Lois Perkins Chapel Fund: A fund contributed by the Perkins Foundation of Wichita Falls, for the purpose of supporting the salary of the chaplain of the University and the chapel program.
The Perkins Library Fund: Established by Mrs. Lois Perkins and Mr. and Mrs. Charles N. Prothro of Wichita Falls, to facilitate acquisitions and other improvements in Cody Memorial Library.
The Rockwell Memorial: A general endowment fund established by the Rockwell Fund, Inc., Houston, in memory and honor of its founder, James M. and Sarah Wade Rockwell. The late Mr. Henry Rockwell, an alumnus of the University, was chair of the Rockwell Fund, Inc.
James M. Rockwell Family Endowment—President’s Discretionary Fund: An endowment fund established by the Rockwell Fund, Inc., Houston. The income from this fund is restricted for use by the President in the President’s Discretionary Fund.
Stella Russell Trust: Established in 1973 by the estate of the late Stella Russell for general endowment purposes.
J.N.R. Score Memorial: A fund established in 1949 in memory of Dr. J.N.R. Score who was President of Southwestern University from 1941 until his death in 1949, for general endowment purposes.
The Searls Endowment Fund: A general endowment fund given by the late David Thomas Searls, Attorney-at-Law of Houston, an alumnus and trustee of the University.
Slover Lectures: Established in 1944 by the Rev. George S. Slover for annual lectures.
The Southwestern Foundation: A group of small gifts received for endowment combined to facilitate investment and accounting.
A. Frank Smith, Jr. Endowed Lecture Fund: Established in 1988 by the law firm of Vinson & Elkins in honor of A. Frank Smith, Jr. to support outstanding guest lecturers in the fields of law, history, government, political science and public service.
Southwestern Advancement Fund: Established through gifts received from 1967-1971 made through the Advancement Campaign to enrich the University’s endowment.
Southwestern Foundation for Lectureships: Established in 1930 by the German Mission Conference for annual lectures.
Tag Endowment: Established in 1974 by Lee R. and Verna K. Tag for general endowment purposes.
The Tapp Memorial: An endowed ministerial and missionary student aid fund created by the will of the late Miss Jennie Tapp of New Boston, Texas. Named The Jennie Tapp Endowment Fund by the Board of Trustees in honor and memory of the donor.
The Alma Thomas Foundation: A general endowment fund for benefit of the School of Fine Arts, given by the late Mrs. Alma Thomas of Austin, who for many years was a member of the Board of Trustees and of the Executive Committee.
Senator John G. Tower’s Papers Endowment: Established by friends of Senator Tower for the maintenance of the John Goodwin Tower Collection.
The Marion G. Tower Fund: Established in memory of Marion in 1998 by Lou B. Tower, Penny Tower Cook, and Jeanne Tower Cox to provide a permanent fund for study abroad to enhance students’ understanding of political, cultural, and social features of societies around the world, or for students to attend scholarly conferences in association with faculty mentors.
The Isla Turner Endowment: Established by the late Mrs. Isla Carroll Turner of Houston. The income to be used for general purposes at the direction of the Board of Trustees. (On June 1, 1979, the Executive Committee identified these funds to serve as endowment for the President’s Home.)
Tuttle Library Endowment: Established by Mrs. Aeolia Tuttle for library endowment.
United Capital Funds Endowment: Established through gifts made from 1964-1971 through the United Capital Funds Campaign to enrich the University’s endowment.
The W-K-M Fund: The general endowment fund of almost three and one-half million dollars created through the friendship of the late Fred McManis, president of the W-K-M Company of Houston, and the late J.N.R. Score, President of Southwestern University from 1941 to 1949.
The Louisa Elizabeth Weiss Fund: A substantial
fund established shortly before her death by Mrs. William Weiss, widow of a
former trustee. The fund was named in her honor by the Board of Trustees.
The West Foundation: Given in 1952, by
the West Foundation, Mr. J. Marion West, and Mrs. Wesley West for general
endowment purposes.
Brown Foundation Memorial: A fund contributed by The Brown Foundation, Inc., of Houston, to establish the following endowed chairs bearing the names of those whose memories will be thereby perpetuated: Herman Brown Chair, Margarett Root Brown Chair, Lillian Nelson Pratt Chair, Lucy King Brown Chair, Elizabeth Root Paden Chair, and the John H. Duncan Chair.
Cullen Foundation Memorial: A fund contributed by The Cullen Foundation of Houston, memorializing the names of Hugh Roy and Lillie Cullen, to establish the Hugh Roy and Lillie Cullen Chair in Economics.
The Dishman Endowment: By Dr. and Mrs. Herbert Dishman of Beaumont, to establish The Herbert and Kate Dishman Chair in Science.
The Herbert and Kate Dishman Professorship: By Dr. and Mrs. Herbert Dishman of Beaumont.
Houston Endowment Inc.: A fund contributed by Houston Endowment Inc., Houston, to establish the Jesse H. and Mary Gibbs Jones Professorship in Mathematics.
The Claud Howard and Elizabeth A. Crawford Endowment: Established in 1999 through the estate of Elizabeth A. Crawford, Class of 1934, to provide visiting scholars or visiting professor programs annually in the Department of English.
The Will Woodward Jackson Professorship: By friends, classmates, and associates of the late Dr. W.W. Jackson to establish the Will W. Jackson Professorship in Education.
Lord Chair in Computer Science: Established by Mr. W. Grogan Lord, distinguished member of the Board of Trustees since 1958, to ensure teaching excellence in the field of Computer Science.
McManis Trust: By the Trustees of the McManis Trust in 1972, to establish the Carolyn and Fred McManis Chair in Philosophy.
Moody Foundation Fund: Contributed in 1974 by The Moody Foundation of Galveston to establish the John Shearn Chair in Business. Mr. John Shearn, maternal grandfather of Mrs. Mary Moody Northen, was an honors graduate of Rutersville College, the founding institution of Southwestern University.
The O’Hara Endowment: By the late Mrs. John B. O’Hara of Dallas, to establish the Robert Sherman Lazenby Chair in Physics and to provide income for University operations.
The John Goodwin Tower Endowment: By friends and associates of Senator Tower to establish the Tower-Hester Chair in Political Science in 1973.
Ward Memorial: A fund raised in 1910 to endow the Bishop Seth Ward Professorship in Religion. More than one-half the amount secured was provided by the late Jesse H. Jones of Houston. The fund is now supported by the Houston Endowment Inc.
The Wilson-Craven Trust: Created by Arthur R.
and Evie Jo Wilson of Houston, in 1973, in loving memory of their parents,
Reverend and Mrs. Albert W. Wilson.
The Allen Memorial: An endowed student aid fund created under the will of the late William Allen of Frisco, Texas, to be known as the William and Abbie Allen Fund.
The Richard T. Alves, Jr. and Susan Alves Bonnette Endowed Scholarship: Established to provide scholarships for gifted and talented students.
The M.D. Anderson Foundation Scholarships: Established by The M.D. Anderson Foundation of Houston, for premedical students.
The Atkin Memorial Scholarship in Mathematics: Given by John Thatcher and Genevieve Critz Atkin in memory of their sons, John Mason and Richard Thatcher. Preference will be given to majors in mathematics or physics and the recipient must be of sophomore, junior, or senior standing.
Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth E. Barnhart Scholarship: Established by Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth E. Barnhart to be awarded to ministerial students worthy of financial aid.
Claud B. and Mary L. Barrett Scholarship: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Claud B. Barrett for educational purposes.
The Beneficiary Grant: Awarded to dependents of ordained ministers of all Methodist Churches.
The Doug and Nell Benold Endowed Scholarship: Established in 1999 by Dr. and Mrs. Doug Benold of Georgetown, Texas, to provide scholarships for graduates of Georgetown High School in need of financial assistance.
The Maxine Benold Endowed Scholarship: Established in 1999 through the estate of Maxine Benold to provide scholarships for students in need of financial assistance.
The W. Clyde Blundell Scholarship: Established in 1990 by Mrs. W. Clyde Blundell in memory of her late husband and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Blundell. The income from this fund is to be awarded to a student in need of financial assistance, with preference for students in the field of teacher education.
The Elizabeth Anne Bonnette and Stephanie Diane Bonnette Endowed Scholarship: Established in 2001 by Sue Birdwell Alves of Lafayette, Louisiana, Class of 1951, in honor of her granddaughters Elizabeth Anne Bonnette, Class of 2001, and Stephanie Diane Bonnette, Class of 2004, to provide scholarships for gifted and talented students.
John L. and Gayl Hall Bradfield Scholarship: Established through the Bradfield Trust in 1998 to provide unrestricted scholarship funds. The trust was created by Dr. John L. Bradfield, a distinguished physician, community leader, and member of First United Methodist Church in Dallas. He and his wife Gayl Hall Bradfield shared a concern for helping young people obtain an education at church-related colleges and universities.
Joseph B. Bramlette Endowed Scholarship: Established by Mr. Joseph B. Bramlette of Longview, the income to be used annually for scholarships to prospective students in the School of Fine Arts.
The Mary Vera Barrett Britt Scholarship: An endowment fund established by the late Mr. T.M. Britt of Wheeler, Texas, in memory of his wife, Vera, an alumna of Southwestern University. The income is used for a student or students majoring in voice in the School of Fine Arts.
Bishop-Durst Memorial Fund: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Durst, in memory of their parents, John W. and Janie Snowden Bishop and Richard J. and Annie Jordan Durst. The scholarship will be awarded to students majoring in mathematics or business, with a preference for accounting majors.
Brown Scholars: Up to 12 students of exceptional academic ability and motivation who are matriculated at the University are designated as Brown Scholars regardless of financial need. Application by incoming students can be made if the criteria for consideration published annually are met. The renewable scholarship awards full tuition, room and board annually. Typically, awards are made to three or four first-year students annually. The endowment for this program was given to the University by The Brown Foundation, Inc. of Houston.
The Alice Pratt Brown Scholarship Fund: Established by Mr. William A. Smith of Houston, in honor of Alice Pratt Brown.
The Elizabeth Feagin Brown and Foy F. Feagin, Jr. Scholarship Fund: Given in support of outstanding students majoring in physics or stringed instruments by Bob Marion Brown and Dorothy Tompkins Brown of Georgetown, Texas. Awards provided by the fund are intended to provide full or partial payment of tuition for qualifying students.
The George and Herman Brown Scholarship Fund: Established by Josephine Lynch of Houston, and enriched by the Trustees of the William A. and Madeline Welder Smith Foundation, in honor of George and Herman Brown.
The George R. Brown Scholarship: Established by Mr. and Mrs. John F. Lynch of Houston, in honor of their friend, Mr. George R. Brown.
The Herman Brown Memorial Scholarship: Established by Mr. and Mrs. John F. Lynch of Houston, in honor of their friend, the late Mr. Herman Brown.
The Lucy King Brown Endowed Scholarship Fund: Established by the Trustees of the William A. and Madeline Welder Smith Foundation in honor of the abiding friendship between Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Lucy King Brown of Houston.
The Carl Burkhart, Jr. Memorial Scholarship: Established in 1971 by The Brown Foundation, Inc., of Houston. Preference is given to a student with financial need, a resident of the state of Texas and of Swiss or German extraction.
The John Smith Cain Scholarship: Established in 1988 by the Effie and Wofford Cain Foundation in memory of John Smith Cain who was Wofford Cain’s brother and father of Foundation Director James B. Cain.
The Turner M. Caldwell III Scholarship Fund: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Turner M. Caldwell, Jr. of Clarendon, Texas, in honor of their son, Dr. Turner M. Caldwell III. This scholarship is to be awarded to pre-medical students who maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.7, in recognition of these students’ scholastic achievement.
The David W. Carter, Jr. Scholarship: Established by Mrs. Wirt Davis of Dallas, in honor of the life and achievements of Dr. David W. Carter, Jr., a distinguished alumnus of the University.
The Iola Bowden Chambers Scholarship in Fine Arts: Established by the late Mrs. Iola Bowden Chambers (Mrs. Walter R.). Preference is given to students studying the piano. Mrs. Chambers served on the faculty of the University as a teacher of piano from 1933 to 1966.
Eva and J.R.A. Carroll Endowed Scholarship Fund: Established to provide student scholarships.
Clara Chapel Memorial Scholarship: By Clara Chapel Bryan of El Paso. The income is used for scholarships for students studying for the ministry, the mission field, etc.
Edward A. Clark Endowed Scholarship Fund: Established by friends in 1988 to honor Distinguished Alumnus, Ambassador Edward A. Clark, for his many years of service to his beloved alma mater. The income is to be used for students in good standing majoring in political science or pre-law.
Class of ’42 Scholarship Fund: Established by alumni from the Class of 1942, the first wartime graduating class, on the occasion of their 50th Reunion in memory of those classmates who gave their lives for freedom. The income from the fund is to be awarded to a student with financial need who maintains a 2.0 grade point average.
The Clayton Fund: Established by the Clayton Fund of Houston, for scholarships.
The Jackson and Julia B. Cox and Frances Cox Carnes Scholarship Fund: Established by members of the Cox family and their friends.
The William Arthur and Mardilla T. Cox Scholarship: Given by the Reverend and Mrs. William Arthur Cox. Preference is given to students preparing for church-related vocations.
The W.A. and Nina Belle Craven Scholarship Fund: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur R. Wilson of Houston, in memory of Mrs. Wilson’s parents. Preference is given to students preparing for the ministry, for missions, or for the teaching profession. Recipients are required to earn the value of their support through work programs at the University.
The Judge Richard Critz Scholarship Fund: Established by John Thatcher and Genevieve Critz Atkin of Georgetown, Texas, for “an outstanding student in a pre-law course of studies with preference for this award being given to students who are National Merit Scholars.”
Cullen Endowed Scholarship Fund: Established by a grant from the Cullen Trust for Higher Education of Houston, Texas. The fund assists students who have demonstrated high academic achievement, and who could not otherwise afford to attend Southwestern.
The Dare Memorial Scholarship: Established by the late Mr. Herman Earl Dare, Sr. and Mrs. Dare, of Robstown, in honor of his mother and father, Michael and Mary Holley Dare, and brother, Henry H. Dare. The scholarship is awarded annually to students of junior or senior standing who are preparing for full-time vocations in the church.
The Milton King Dare Endowed Scholarship: Established by the St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, San Antonio, in honor of Dr. Milton King Dare, the income to support a United Methodist student preparing for full-time church vocational work.
The Davidson Family Charitable Foundation Scholarship: Established by The Davidson Family Charitable Foundation.
The B.L. Davis Scholarship: Established by Mrs. Ida M. Looney in memory of her father’s business partner, the Honorable B.L. Davis. The scholarship is in the field of history, government, and political science and is offered first to qualified students from Navarro County, Texas.
The Keith and Mary S. Davis Endowed Scholarship: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Keith Davis of Tempe, Arizona, in memory of their fathers, Mr. Charles A. Davis and Mr. Terry L. Moore. The income from this fund is to provide scholarships for graduates of Thorndale High School and/or students majoring in the Department of Economics and Business.
Marshall C. Donaldson and Doris C. Donaldson Endowed Scholarship: Established in 1998 by Doris C. Donaldson of San Antonio, to provide scholarships for students who maintain good academic standing.
The Margie and Z.V. Donigan Scholarship: Given by Mr. and Mrs. Z.V. Donigan of Houston. The Donigans were members of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church of Houston where former President Durwood Fleming served as pastor from 1945 to 1961.
T.L. and Nola Douglas Endowed Scholarship: Established in 1994 for needy students from Bell or Williamson counties (preferably students from Bartlett or Salado) by the estate of the late T.L. Douglas.
The Thomas Lucius Downs, Jr. and Grace Pate Downs Scholarships: Scholarships up to full tuition are available to dependents of University faculty and staff.
The Enron Corporation Scholarship Fund: Established in 1991 by the Enron Corporation. Income from this fund to be used for students maintaining a 3.0 GPA studying economics or business.
The William Stamps Farish Endowed Scholarship Fund: Established in 1986 by the William Stamps Farish Fund.
H. Frank and Amanda M. Ferguson Scholarship Fund: Income from this fund to be used to support students studying for the Christian ministry.
Lucile L. Fowler Fund: Established by the estate of the late Lucile L. Fowler in 1984 for the education of young people preparing for full time ministry in The United Methodist Church.
General Academic Scholarships: Renewable on an annual basis, $2,000 to $6,000 awarded to students based on the six criteria used for admission purposes.
The George Foundation Scholarship Fund: Established by the George Foundation to be used for scholarships to students from Fort Bend County, Texas.
Emily Bell Gibson Fund: Given in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher C. Bell and their daughter, Mrs. Emily Bell Gibson, of Brazoria County, Texas, to aid a student who is an orphan.
Dr. John C. Godbey Memorial Scholarship: Established in memory of Dr. John C. Godbey, a distinguished professor at Southwestern University, to be awarded to deserving students majoring in chemistry.
Dr. Raul R. Gomez Endowed Scholarship: Established by the family of Dr. Gomez as a memorial, the renewable scholarship will be awarded to students with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Preference will be given to students from the Rio Grande Conference or of Hispanic heritage.
Josue Gonzalez Endowed Scholarship: Established in memory of The Reverend Josue Gonzalez by Mrs. Josue Gonzalez and family. First preference for this award is given to Hispanic pre-ministerial students with second preference to Hispanic students from the Rio Grande Conference.
The Goodrich Scholarship Fund: Established in 1965 in honor of the sixtieth wedding anniversary of the late Dr. and Mrs. Robert E. Goodrich, Sr., by their children and friends, to be used to support worthy and competent students.
The “Brother” John E. and “Sister” Green Scholarship Fund: Established by The Rockwell Fund, Inc., of Houston.
The O.P. Hairgrove Educational Trust: The University is one of the beneficiaries of the O.P. Hairgrove Educational Trust, which was established by the late Mr. O.P. Hairgrove to assist young men in preparation for ministry in the Methodist and Baptist churches. Income from the fund is used for work scholarships and loans limited to preministerial students.
The Jean Sholars Hall Scholarship: Established by her mother, Mrs. O.I. Sholars of Orange, Texas, preference given to junior and senior students with financial need. Mrs. Hall, who died in 1976, was an outstanding student at Southwestern from 1942 to 1946.
The Vinson Hammond Fund for Music Performance and Scholarship: Established in 1992 by Hubert and Jenny Hammond in memory of their son, Vinson Hammond. Earnings from the endowment support music programs and scholarship, such as the following: music performance, with particular consideration to piano performance, chamber music and contemporary music; master classes; artists in residence; student scholarships; research and/or professional development for students and faculty.
Hankla Scholarship: Established by Mrs. William Lee Hankla (Edwina Hurt) “to the glory of God,” and in memory of her husband, Reverend Wm. Lee Hankla, and their son, Air Force Major Walter V. Hankla. Income is to be used to assist financially needy ministerial students.
The Bryan Hanks Scholarship Fund: Established by Mrs. Bryan Hanks and Ms. Nancy Hanks of Washington, D.C., in memory of Bryan Hanks, the income from which is awarded to any deserving student in good academic standing.
The Larry Hanks Scholarship: A gift from Mrs. Bryan Hanks, formerly of Washington, D.C., and Mr. Hanks of Fort Worth, as a memorial to their son, Mr. Larry Hanks, for competent students needing financial aid.
The Ernest R. Hardin Endowed Scholarship: Established in 1987 by Kenneth Newell of Georgetown, Texas, in memory of his father, to provide scholarships for students in need of financial aid studying speech communications.
The Fannie Brady Harris Scholarship Fund: Established in 1986, in memory of Fannie Brady Harris, by Brady Harris. The proceeds are to be awarded to women students with need.
William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship: Awarded to students with demonstrated financial need and high academic achievement.
Nettie Hereford Music Scholarship: Established by Mrs. Nettie Hereford Willmann, the income from the fund to be used for a scholarship for a male student majoring in music, with organ being his major instrument.
The James A. and Stella Wade Hill Memorial Scholarship: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Conrad M. Blucher of Corpus Christi, in memory of Mrs. Blucher’s parents, the income to be used for the education of competent and worthy students.
The Mary Merle Hill Memorial Ministerial Scholarship: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Conrad M. Blucher of Corpus Christi, in memory of Mrs. Blucher’s sister, a long-time public school and Sunday School teacher, the income to be used for the establishment of a ministerial scholarship.
The Hispanic Leadership and Service Endowed Scholarship Fund: Established in 1994 by the William A. and Madeline Welder Smith Foundation of Houston to recognize three outstanding members of the University community: the late John Diaz, a Physical Plant employee from 1956 to 1971; Ernesto Nieto, Class of 1964, founder of the National Hispanic Institute, and 1994 Distinguished Alumnus; and Dr. Vicente Villa, holder of the Lillian Nelson Pratt Chair in Science and 1993 CASE U.S. Professor of the Year. The scholarship will be awarded to junior and senior students of Hispanic heritage who are in good standing and who have provided service and leadership to the Southwestern community.
The Wesley V. and Inda M. Hite Scholarship: Established by the late Mr. and Mrs. Wesley V. Hite of Denton. The income from this fund is to be awarded to pre-seminary students who are preparing for the pastoral ministry.
The William Douglas Hooker Endowed Scholarship: Established in 1996 through the generous philanthropy of alumni, colleagues, staff and friends in honor of Dr. William Hooker, professor of psychology and founder of the Southwestern psychology internship program in 1966, to provide stipends for junior or senior psychology majors, with financial need, who participate in the University psychology internship program.
The Claud Howard and Elizabeth A. Crawford Endowed Scholarship: Established in 1999 through the estate of Elizabeth A. Crawford, Class of 1934, in honor of her father, Claud Howard, former Southwestern professor of English.
The Howell Scholarships: Established by Mrs. Minnie A. Howell to provide scholarships for premedical students, given in memory of her husband, the late Dr. E.P. Howell.
The Drusilla Huffmaster Scholarship: Established by the late Nina J. Cullinan.
The Dr. V.R. Hurst Memorial Endowment Fund:
Established by the Hurst Foundation of Longview, Texas, for the training of
students in science and medicine, in memory of Dr. V. Reeves Hurst,
distinguished physician, churchman, and citizen of Longview, founder of the
Hurst Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital and Clinic
in Longview.
The Sidney S. and Julia Rather Hyman Scholarship Fund: Established in 1995 in loving memory by their daughter, Julia E. Hyman, Southwestern University Class of 1931, and also in honor of Mary L. Hyman, F. Louise Hyman, and Edward S. and Evelyn Ward Hyman, the sisters, brother, and sister-in-law of Julia E. Hyman. The scholarship provides tuition benefits to one or more students.
The Jaysn Flynn Jameson Memorial Scholarship: Established in 2000 by family and friends of Jaysn F. Jameson, a 1990 graduate of Southwestern University who died in 1991. The scholarship is to be awarded to a student in good standing, majoring in the natural sciences (biology, chemistry or physics), who requires financial assistance in order to attend Southwestern.
The Tom M. Johnson Band Scholarship: Established by Mrs. Tom Johnson, her daughter Kathy, and friends of Tom Johnson in his honor. The income is to be used for scholarships for students who are members of the band at Southwestern.
Jesse H. Jones Scholarship for Men and the Mary Gibbs Jones Scholarship for Women: Established in 1978 by Houston Endowment Inc., Houston. The income is used for scholarship or fellowship purposes.
The Jesse H. and Mary Gibbs Jones Minority Scholars Program: Established by the Houston Endowment Inc., Houston in 1988 for support of minority scholars at Southwestern University.
The Judge Marvin Jones Scholarship Fund: Established as an endowed fund in 1976 through a bequest from the late Judge Marvin Jones of Amarillo, Texas.
Ranken and Louise Kennedy Endowed Scholarship: Established by the Ranken and Louise Kennedy Foundation in 1995. The scholarship is available to a student in good standing. It is the wish of the foundation that the same student retain the scholarship during her or his years at Southwestern, as long as the recipient remains in good standing as a full-time student.
Keyser-Neas Memorial Scholarship: Established by Dr. and Mrs. Lester L. Keyser in honor of their parents “providing an annual scholarship for a premedical student planning to enter the service of the church in the mission field; or, if not awarded to a premedical student, the scholarship shall be awarded to a full-time life service student.”
The King’s Daughters Scholarship: Established by the Georgetown, Texas, Chapter of King’s Daughters for students from Georgetown High School.
George T. and Clara King and Sons Scholarship: Established in 1976 by Mrs. H.E. Dare of Robstown, Texas.
Laura Kuykendall Endowed Scholarship: Established by Mr. and Mrs. M.K. McDaniel of LaMarque, Texas, in August, 1979.
The Lewis Memorial Endowment Fund: Established by the late Mrs. Pauline Lewis Stiles of Waco, Texas, in memory of her parents, Ella M. and Clinton C. Lewis, for students preparing for the ministry or for other full-time service in the United Methodist Church.
The W. Grogan Lord Endowed Scholarship Fund: Established by Mr. O.V. Bennett in honor of Mr. W. Grogan Lord, long-time trustee of the University.
Frances Love Endowed Scholarship Fund: Gift from the estate of the late Miss Frances Love of Georgetown, of which “the earnings are to be used for scholarships in foreign languages and the fine arts.”
The Red and Charline McCombs Scholarship
Program: Established in 1983 by Red and Charline McCombs of San Antonio,
these scholarships are awarded to

Southwestern students. A distinguished alumnus of the University, Mr. McCombs is
a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and serves on the
board’s Executive Committee.
The Jane Brown McCook Endowed Scholarship: Established in 2001 by Mrs. Genevieve Caldwell of Amarillo, Texas, to provide scholarships for students majoring in English or theatre.
The Margaret Mood McKennon Work Scholarships: Established by the late Honorable C. Rhea Starnes of Gladewater, Texas, in honor of Mrs. Starnes’ mother, the late Mrs. Margaret Mood McKennon, daughter of Dr. Francis Asbury Mood, the first Regent of the University.
Martha M. McMichael and Henry C. McMichael Scholarship Fund: Established by Mr. and Mrs. W.A. McMichael in memory of his parents, Martha M. and Henry C. McMichael. The income from this fund is to be awarded to students in good standing.
The Sue Mood McMichael Endowment for International Studies: Income from the endowment is awarded to support one or more Southwestern University students engaged in study, outside the United States, which is approved for academic credit by the University and which pertains to the recipient’s bachelor degree plan.
Bernice and C.W. McPhail Memorial Scholarship: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Wilson McPhail of Houston, on September 5, 1980, in memory of his parents.
The Norman C. Malechek Scholarship: Given by Mrs. Loween Malechek Maxwell in memory of her late husband to establish annual scholarships for needy and worthy students in the humanities.
The Marion Elizabeth Mallard Scholarship Fund: An endowed scholarship fund for students studying foreign languages, with first preference given French majors, second preference given Latin majors, and third preference given majors in other foreign languages.
The Milton Maupin Scholarship Fund: Established by Mr. C.S. Maupin of San Antonio, in honor of his father, the late Reverend Milton Maupin, a Methodist minister.
Dewey A. Mayhew Memorial Scholarship: Established by family and friends in memory of and to honor Mr. Dewey A. Mayhew.
Carolyn Shimer Merritt Endowed Scholarship: Established in 1998 by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Merritt of Alice, Texas, to provide scholarships for math or chemistry majors who plan to teach.
The Gertrude Foster Mood and Robert Gibbs Mood Scholarship Fund: Established by their daughter, Sue Mood McMichael, and son-in-law, W.A. McMichael, of Austin, in their memory.
The Walter L. and Reta Mae Moore Endowed Scholarship: Established by Walter L. and Reta Mae Moore in 1990. Intended to provide support for international students at Southwestern.
National Achievement Scholarships: Renewable on an annual basis, $7,500 awarded to students who have been named as semifinalists in the National Achievement Award competition.
National Hispanic Scholarships: Renewable on an annual basis, $7,500 awarded to students designated at the Scholar level in the National Hispanic Scholar recognition Program.
National Merit Scholarship: National Merit finalists who name Southwestern as their first-choice college may receive $7,500 scholarships from the University. These no-need scholarships are renewable for each of the four years at Southwestern as a full-time student. If a student establishes financial need, the University is committed to meeting 100 percent of the demonstrated need and would increase the National Merit scholarship in line with a demonstration of additional need.
The Loyal L. and Exa Nelms Endowed Scholarship: Established by Mrs. L.L. Nelms of Wimberley, Texas, and her family, in memory of her husband.
W.L. and Della Quinn Nesbitt Memorial Fund: Established by Lee Quinn Nesbitt of Columbus, Texas, in memory of her parents. Income is used for scholarships and grants for foreign students of junior or senior standing.
Edward P. and Janice G. Onstot Endowed Scholarship: Established in 1994 by the estate of the late Janice Goodson Onstot for students majoring in philosophy or religion.
The Captain and Mrs. Benjamin D. Orgain Endowed Scholarships: Established by their children, Mrs. Kate Orgain McCullough, Mrs. Drusilla Orgain Ransome, Mr. James Clinton Orgain, and the Honorable Will E. Orgain. Preference is given to residents of Bastrop County, Texas.
The Will E. Orgain Memorial Scholarship: Given by family and friends of Will E. Orgain, and by the Gulf States Utilities Company.
The Paula Pearce Scholarship Fund: Established by the Estate of Paula McAllen, this award provides scholarship assistance to need-based, full-time students in good academic standing. First consideration is given to individuals who are engaged in campus employment to earn part of their financial aid.
The Lois Craddock Perkins Endowed Scholarship: Established by the late Mr. J.J. Perkins of Wichita Falls, Texas, in honor of his wife, Mrs. Lois Craddock Perkins.
The Gus Pinkerton Scholarship: A bequest from the late Gus Pinkerton, with income to be used to support students preparing for the Christian ministry.
The George W. Pirtle Scholarship Fund: Established by Mr. George W. Pirtle of Tyler, Texas, the income from which “will provide an annual scholarship for one or more students who have demonstrated the ability to maintain a high level of academic accomplishment.”
The Walter A. Quebedeaux, Jr. Memorial Scholarship: Established by friends of Dr. Walter A. Quebedeaux, Jr. with income to be used for students preparing to enter the field of environmental sciences.
Dan Rather Endowed Scholarship: Established by Red and Charline McCombs on Jan. 14, 1995, on the occasion of Mr. Rather’s visit to Southwestern for the announcement of a major financial campaign.
Charley Ray Scholarship: Established by friends and co-workers in honor of Charley Ray, a long-time employee of Southwestern University. The income from this fund is to be awarded to dependents of physical plant staff employees.
The Reader’s Digest Foundation Endowed Scholarships: Established by the Reader’s Digest Foundation, Pleasantville, N.Y., Mr. Sterling Fisher, Executive Director.
The John D. Richards Scholarship Fund: Established to honor Dr. John D. Richards, former Dean of the School of Fine Arts at Southwestern. Students in any academic field who represent the highest ideals in the search for truth and a striving for excellence may receive this scholarship. In order to retain this award, recipients should maintain a 3.0 or better grade point average in all academic subjects.
The Will Mann Richardson Scholarship: Established by friends and family of the late Will Mann Richardson of Tyler, Texas.
Rio Grande Conference Scholarships: Given through special funds set aside by the conference for scholarships and grants-in-aid to students from the Rio Grande Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. The scholarship will be awarded to juniors or seniors with an overall minimum GPA of 3.33 and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in no less than six hours of philosophy or religion.

The Phillip Sneed and the J.M. West Family Scholarships: Established to enable young men and/or women to engage in the study of business and subjects related thereto. The Snyder-Wilcox Scholarship Fund was established by the late Mary Catherine Wilcox of Austin in memory of her mother and father, Stella Snyder and Charles Allen Wilcox. The award is for students of history of the Southwest.
The R. Otis Sory Memorial Scholarship: Established by Mrs. Leila Peyton Hall providing an annual scholarship for a ministerial or life service student.
Robert L. Soulen Endowed Scholarship: Established in 1998 through the Estate of Alma Schultz, to honor Dr. Robert L. Soulen, Professor Emeritus and former holder of the Lillian Nelson Pratt Chair in Science, to fund scholarships for chemistry majors in good academic standing.
The Southland Paper Mills Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund: Established in 1985 by the Southland Paper Mills Foundation of Houston. To be awarded United States citizens who are graduates of Texas high schools, with preference being given to East Texas graduates.
The Fred Winchell and Mary Romans Sparks Endowed Scholarship Fund: A memorial scholarship fund established by Kermit D. and Mary Sparks Matthews, members of their family and friends of Fred Winchell and Mary Romans Sparks. The income is used to assist mathematics students at the University.
The Angus Springer Scholarship: Established by Sam and Sallie Smoot Lewis, Houston, and supported by additional contributions from Springer friends and family members, for students in the Department of Theatre and Communication.

Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Trammell Scholarship: Established by the Sue Fondren Trammell Family Trust of Houston.
The United Methodist Scholarships: Awarded by the Board of Education of The United Methodist Church to a limited number of Methodist students at the University. An applicant must have earned a B average and establish need for financial assistance.
The Andy “A.D.” Walker Endowed Scholarship: Established in 2001 in memory of Andrew Walker by Mr. and Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Walker of Simonton, Texas, family and friends. A Southwestern sophomore at the time of his death in 1996, Walker was an outstanding student, played basketball for Southwestern and was an avid golfer. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarships for textbook expenses for students in need.
The Walter E. Weaver Scholarship: Established by Miss Leila Weaver in memory of her brother, who, with her, was a graduate of the University. Limited to ministerial students.
John and Georgie Wheeler Scholarship Fund: Established by the Board of Trustees in honor of the late Dr. John D. Wheeler, long-time chair of the board, and in memory of his wife, Georgie.
The Ralph M. Whitmore Endowed Scholarship Fund: Established to honor Dr. Ralph M. Whitmore, professor of mathematics at Southwestern for 44 years. First preference for this award is given to mathematics majors with second preference to natural science majors. If no suitable recipient is found in this group of students, the award may be given to a deserving student from another major. To continue to receive this award, the recipients should maintain a 3.0 or better average in all subjects.
The James A. “Bill” and Doris L. Williams Scholarships: Established by the James A. “Bill” and Doris L. Williams Scholarship Foundation. To be awarded on an objective and non-discriminatory basis to students with a demonstrated capacity for leadership, financial need, and prior academic performance.
The Paulette Luther Williams Endowed Scholarship: Established in 2000 by H. Brent and Joanne Powers Austin, Class of 1974, of Houston, Texas, in memory of Paulette Luther Williams, a 1968 Southwestern graduate, to honor her lifelong commitment to education.
The Mr. and Mrs. Jasper L. “Bo” Wilson Scholarship: Created by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Wilson of Lake Jackson, Texas, for endowment, the income to be used to provide scholarship aid for students. Preference is given first to students from First United Methodist Church or Chapelwood United Methodist Church at Lake Jackson; secondly, to assist students from the Brazosport area of the Methodist churches; thirdly, to recruit and assist students from the Brazosport area.

The O.P. Hairgrove Student Loan Fund: By the late Mr. O.P. Hairgrove to assist young men in preparation for ministry in the Methodist and Baptist churches. Income from the fund is used for scholarships and loans limited to preministerial students.
Lyle and Mable Hawthorne Memorial Loan Fund: By the Reverend and Mrs. Theo L. Cox of Garfield, Texas. Used as an emergency loan fund for students preparing for the ministry, students who are children of a minister’s family, other students with a financial need, and other members of the University community with financial need.
Killson Scholarship Loan Fund: Established by the Killson Educational Foundation in 1975.
The Allen Edgar Moss Fund: Established as a memorial by his late wife, Mrs. Winnie Coker Moss of Nacogdoches, and provides for loans to deserving students in need at Southwestern University.
Alice Leala Kerr Price Student Loan Fund: Established by the estate of Alice Leala Kerr Price in 1966. Funds are held in the Alice Leala Kerr Price Charitable Trust Account at Frost National Bank, San Antonio. Southwestern University’s share of the net income is used for making loans to needy, full-time students.
Joe Pritchett Memorial Fund: Established by the Board of Christian Education of the Texas Conference, United Methodist Church, in honor of the late Professor Joe Pritchett.
The P.E. Riley Scholarship Loan Fund: Established by the Reverend Philip E. Riley, DD, and Mrs. Ethel I. Riley.
Student Loan Fund of the Methodist Church: From the loan fund of the Methodist Board of Education. Available to members of The United Methodist Church.
Mr. and Mrs. James F. Weed Students’ Loan Fund: Established by Mrs. Mary Weed Fletcher, a former student of the University, in memory and honor of her father and mother.
The Jessie Dudley West Fund: Established by the late Mrs. J.M. West, Sr. Loans are made by the trustees of the fund to deserving students who could not continue their education without assistance. The fund has been named in honor of Mrs. West by the trustees of the University.

Margaret F. White Student Loan Fund:

The Dr. Minor Lafayette Williams Memorial
Fund: Established by the Woman’s Society of Christian Service of the
First United Methodist Church of Robstown, Texas, in honor of the late Dr. Minor
Lafayette Williams, physician and churchman of Robstown, to assist qualified
students, with preference being given to premedical students and students from
Nueces County, Texas, and the Southwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist
Church. The fund provides loans which are interest-free during college and
professional training. Information concerning loan funds and application
procedures should be obtained from the Director of Financial Aid of the
University.
The Southwestern University Teaching Awards:
Recognizing quality teaching, these annual awards are nominated by students and
are awarded one each to a full-time, tenure-track: but untenured: assistant or
associate professor and a tenured or full professor.
The William Carrington Finch Award:
Made to a full-time faculty member for conspicuous accomplishment in furthering
the aims of the University. This award is made possible by a gift to the
endowment by Dr. Finch’s wife and their two sons,
Dr. William Tyree Finch and Dr. Richard
Carrington Finch. Dr. William C. Finch was the 11th President of Southwestern
University.
The Accounting Excellence Award: Given annually to an outstanding senior student majoring in accounting. The award is given by the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Alpha Chi Award: Given annually to the student of the first-year class who makes the highest grade point average on a minimum of thirty semester hours work.
The Goostree-Morgan-Springer Scholarship Fund: Established in 1983 by Mrs. Lacy W. Goostree of Fort Worth. To be awarded to one of the recipients of the annual Goostree-Morgan-Springer Award.
The Laura Kuykendall Communication Award: This award was established by the late Miss Pearl A. Neas in memory of Miss Laura Kuykendall and is awarded to an outstanding communication student.
The Bob Lancaster Award: This award is made in the spring semester to an art major for the best overall work in art for the year. It was established in memory of the late Robert L. Lancaster, sculptor and chair of the Department of Art in the School of Fine Arts. Selection of the recipient of the award is made on the basis of a portfolio judged by the entire art faculty and the dean of the School of Fine Arts.
The Frank Luksa Award: This award is made in the spring semester to a student in the field of sociology. It was established in 1974 in honor of Dr. Frank Luksa’s retirement from long years of service as head of the Sociology Department at the University.
Mask and Wig Awards: Individual awards are made to students who give superior performances in Mask and Wig productions.
The Henry E. Meyer Memorial Music Composition Award: Given to an outstanding music student each year from funds donated by Mr. and Mrs. R. Cochrane Penick.
The Annie Edwards Barcus Minga Speech Contest: The income from this gift, made possible by Dr. and Mrs. T. Herbert Minga of Dallas, is used to establish awards in persuasive speaking, the competitors being judged in a contest on a variety of factors including originality and creativity. The late Mrs. Minga, nee Annie Edwards Barcus, was a distinguished alumna and former teacher on the faculty of Southwestern University. Dr. Minga was a member of the University’s Board of Trustees from 1965 to 1976.
Merriman Morton Business Leadership Award: Given by Dorothy Drummer on the occasion of Merriman Morton being presented the Distinguished Alumnus Award on April 26, 1996. Awarded to an outstanding senior with a major in the Department of Economics and Business demonstrating business leadership and potential for success in the business community.
The Men’s Panhellenic Association Award: This Association provides a scholarship award to the active fraternity chapter on the campus making the highest grade average each semester.
The Women’s Panhellenic of Georgetown Award: This group provides a scholarship award to the active sorority chapter on the campus making the highest grade average each semester.
The David Knox Porter Award: This award is given annually to the outstanding pretheological student. It was established in memory of the Reverend David Knox Porter, DD, an alumnus of the University, by his daughters, Mrs. Meade F. Griffin of Austin, Texas, and Mrs. Leslie Etter of New York City.
Mary Mann Richardson Award: This award is given annually to a member of the pledge class of the Zeta Chapter of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. It was established by Mr. and Mrs. Will Mann Richardson of Tyler in 1975.
The Barbara Fay Brown Schoenewolf Memorial Fund: Established by classmates and friends as a tribute to the vision, talent and warmth of Barbara Fay Brown Schoenewolf, a 1971 graduate of Southwestern who died in 1989. Intended to award achievement in art at Southwestern.
The John Score Award in Philosophy is given periodically to a senior student majoring in philosophy whose work has been done with distinction. It was established in 1998 by the Department of Religion and Philosophy in honor of Dr. John Score, who taught in the department from 1947 and again from 1955 until his death in 1995, and who was instrumental in establishing the program in philosophy during his tenure as chair of the department.
The Norman W. Spellmann Award in Religion is given periodically to a senior student majoring in religion whose work has been done with distinction. It was established in 1998 by the Department of Religion and Philosophy in honor of Dr. Norman W. Spellmann on the occasion of his retirement after thirty-eight years of teaching in the department.
The Mary Lynn Webb Starnes Music Award: Given by Mrs. C.W. Webb of Elgin, Texas, and the late Mr. Webb, in memory of their daughter, Mary Lynn, to an outstanding senior “for proficiency in music performance, excellence in academic affairs, and great promise in the field of music.”
The Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award: This award is given annually to the outstanding senior student graduating in the Department of Economics and Business. Selection is made by the departmental faculty and is based upon academic achievement in a specific field of the Department.
