The First-Year Seminar (FYS) is a required two-credit graded course, taken during the fall semester of your first year. Your professor will guide your inquiry into your selected topic and also help you to understand the academic expectations and resources at Southwestern.

But, don’t let the fun topics mislead you: Seminars are real courses with real academic content designed to prepare you for the rigors of Southwestern coursework. Students find the Seminars challenging, yet rewarding. Living and Learning at SouthwesternAs you consider the FYS choices, you will also want to decide if you are interested in participating in a Living-Learning Community (LLC) residential experience. In LLCs, your coed residence hall environment becomes a hub for Seminar classes, gatherings and activities—your LLC classmates will also be your roommates and suitemates. Click on the Living-Learning Communities link for more infomation about the LLC option and pay attention to the LLC designations in the FYS descriptions.
