Living-Learning Communities
Advanced-Entry Seminars (AES) are two-credithour upper-level graded courses, taken during the fall semester of your first year. Your professor will guide your inquiry into your selected topic and also help you to understand the academic expectations and resources at Southwestern. Seminars are real courses with real academic content designed to prepare you for the rigors of Southwestern coursework.
When do Advanced-Entry Seminars begin?
AES will begin the Monday of Orientation Week (August 17) and continue through the f irst seven weeks of the semester. All new students, including transfers, are required to attend Orientation Week, which begins on Saturday, August 15, and continues through Sunday, August 23. Orientation is more than finding your way around--it's a way to introduce you to our community and help you make the most of your Southwestern experience.
What's it like to live on campus in a Living-Learning Community?
The difference lies mainly in the kinds of conversations and activities that will happen because you and your classmates will be sharing space together. You may find yourself staying up late to talk about a lecture or engaged in a midnight game of frolf (with mandatory bonus points for anyone who quotes Bill Murray's character in Caddyshack, of course).
New transfer students living on campus will reside with their AES cohort in a living-learning community. If you've already decided to live on campus, no further action on your part is necessary. Residence hall move-in begins Friday, August 14.
