DEWC MO
Simply put, we're here to help you with your writing as much as is humanly possible (which is should come as no big surprise, considering that we're the Writing Center). Says our mission statement, we are here "to help Southwestern students improve their writing. Specially trained student consultants work one-on-one with writers at all levels, on all texts, and at all stages in the process. With attention to both the process and the product of writing – both the writer and the text – consultants can help with anything from brainstorming to final editing." And there you have it.
To go a little further in detail, a friendly bulleted list of things that we can help you with is provided with utmost humility:
- Getting started or formulating a thesis
-
- Organization
- Revising
- Grammar
- Documentation
- Style
We deal primarily with academic essays, but we'll look at anything from application essays or personal statements for grad school to creative writing.
Something Rather Important
- The DEWC and the Honor Code
Coming to the DEWC is NOT a violation of the Honor Code. Just mention that you took your paper to the Writing Center when you sign your pledge, and it's all good.
Help Us to Help You
In order to provide the best consultation possible, there are a few things we ask of our clients. A second bulleted list is in order here:
- Prompt - By all that is good and holy, please bring your prompt with you! It helps us tremendously to know what exactly it is you have to do.
- Printed Copy of Whatever You've Done So Far - It may seem obvious, but sometimes these things don't get printed out. We really do need a hardcopy.
- Specific Requests - Of course, we won't turn you away if you come in and simply request that your paper be looked at. But having something specific in mind, for example, "Is my thesis strong and clearly communicated?" or "I'd like to take a look at my organization" will provide some direction for the consultation. It makes it easier for us to help you. Chances are that if you come in with a specific request, you'll walk away more satisfied than you would've without one.
- Come Early - Remember, the average consultation takes at least 40 minutes. For example, if you show up at 9:45, we reserve the right to request that you come back another day.
