Junior math major Alyssa Pampell is one of 100 students to receive the 2005 Hollings Scholarship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The scholarship provides up to $8,000 of academic assistance per school year for full-time study during the junior and senior years and includes a paid internship during the summer between the junior and senior years at a NOAA facility.

Three sociology students in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology recently presented their research in the Honors Program at the 2005 annual meetings of the American Sociological Association. Ali Hendley presented her paper titled "Predictors of Rape Myth Acceptance: An Examination of Sexual Permissiveness, Religiosity and Gender." Krys Wyatt talked about her research in the paper "Pornography Use and Rape Myth Acceptance: Different Effects for Different Groups." Both of these papers were based upon a survey conducted on campus last year in conjunction with the Brown Symposium organized by T. Walter Herbert in the English department. Narda Hernandez presented her paper "Supporting Ourselves: Exploring an HIV/AIDS Support Group in Rural South Africa," based upon work she did in her semester overseas earlier this year. The ASA Honors Program included approximately 60 students from colleges and universities across the country. Southwestern University had more students in the program than any other institution. The meetings took place Aug. 12-16 in Philadelphia, Pa.
Senior Grant Kessler has received a $3,000 scholarship from the Texas Association of School Personnel Administrators. The scholarship will be presented at the organization's annual awards luncheon in Austin Dec. 8. TASPA awards four scholarships a year to outstanding students who plan to pursue careers in education. Kessler, who plans to teach middle school science and math, was one of two students who received the highest scholarship.
