MUSIC STUDY

Southwestern offers a Bachelor of Music degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in music. Concentrations within the Bachelor of Music degree include education, performance, theory, literature and sacred music. A minor in music is also possible. Music majors must meet the general education standards common to all SU students. In addition, they must pass a keyboard proficiency requirement and a sophomore barrier performance examination. The Southwestern University capstone requirement may be fulfilled in various ways by music majors, including a public recital or recitals, or a lecture or other public presentation; consult the University catalog for more information.

LIST OF POSSIBLE CONCENTRATIONS

Bachelor of Arts
Though the Bachelor of Arts with a major in music is intended for students who wish to pursue a broad-based liberal arts education, it is also an acceptable degree for admission into many graduate programs in music. Southwestern's Bachelor of Arts students take the same rigorous core curriculum in music as all other music majors.

Performance
All students may study instrumental or vocal techniques with a member of the music faculty, many of whom have national and international performing careers. Vocal and instrumental students are encouraged to participate in SU's many performing ensembles. Keyboard students have many opportunities for study, growth and performance including experience in accompanying, chamber music and performance with orchestra. There are frequent opportunities to hear and work with guest artists; recent visitors to campus include violinist Eugene Fodor, pianist Kevin Kenner, violist Korey Konkol, guitarist Ricardo Cobo and members of the Miro and Shanghai Quartets. Organ students have use of the architecturally and acoustically superior environment of Lois Perkins Chapel on campus.

Music Education
Courses include instrumental, choral and advanced conducting, instrumental methods, choral techniques and wind literature survey. During senior year, each student working toward certification as a public school music teacher will have the opportunity for practice teaching at schools in the Austin area. Music education students have the opportunity to study with faculty who have taught music in public school and who are active in conducting high school band, choir and orchestra festivals.

Music Literature
SU offers courses in the history and literature of music of the west, from the Medieval period to the present. Courses are also offered in world music, music in the United States, keyboard and vocal literature. The Music Literature concentration is intended as preparation for students who wish to go on to graduate study in Musicology.

Music Theory and Composition
The Music Theory/Composition concentration is intended for students who wish to pursue music theory and/or composition as a career, with the aim of preparing them for further study at the graduate level. After grounding in traditional tonal harmony, specific topic areas such as species counterpoint, Baroque counterpoint, Classical sonata form, and ninteenth- and twentieth-century techniques are addressed in the core theory sequence. Ear-training is an integral part of the program. Student composers work in individual or small group lessons with faculty and guest composers and have many opportunities to hear their works performed.

Sacred Music
Intended for the student pursuing a career as a church musician, this program prepares the student in choral conducting, with a thorough academic background in church music literature and materials. The program includes a mandatory internship with a practicing church musician, as well as the opportunity to organize and conduct a complete performance of a standard work for chorus and orchestra in a public concert.
