NEW
TUITION TIMELINES AND
REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION PROCEDURES
In the past, each semester saw a handful of students who pre-registered
but did not
show
up to attend classes. Some of these students had pre-registered to hedge
their
bets against a potential problem with a study abroad program. Others had
decided
to take a break, but did not ask us to cancel their registrations. In these
cases,
the student had hardly ever paid the tuition bill for the semester, but
he/she
remained
on class rosters and encumbered seats which might be in high demand
by
other students who needed those classes. The old process did not generally
allow
identification of the non-returnees early enough to make the seats realistically
available
for new students or for the add process.
.
Effective
with the Fall 2002 semester, three changes were implemented:
1.Tuition
bills will be due about seven to ten working days earlier than in the
past.
The Fall 2002 due date was August 2nd. it is December 13
for
Spring 2003 and May 2 for Summer 2003. This will give the Business
Office
time to process all payments, research the status of financial aid and
loan
applications, and try to resolve any known issues.
2.Shortly
before the start of the semester, pre-registration schedules not
paid
and not approved as "sufficiently covered by an acceptable plan" will be
cancelled,
thereby making those seats available to new registrants and adds by
other
students. Students whose schedules are cancelled, but who subsequently
pay,
will be required to use the late registration process, including a late
fee and
signatures
of instructors and advisors. There will be no guarantee that the same
classes
will still be available to these students.
3.While
off-campus students will still need to provide local address and phone
number,
the above changes will eliminate the need to report to the Office of the
Registrar
to formally "confirm registration" during the first two class days.
.
With
this plan, along with new signature policies for dropped courses and web
displays
of open seats, students should be able to locate and add needed courses
more
quickly, as well as drop unneeded courses before the first class day, when
they
are subject to being billed for them.
