to announce the 2005 Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar lecture by Professor Steve ShapinSeptember 15, 2005, at 4:00 p.m. in the Julie Puett Howry Center"Expertise, Common-Sense and the Atkins Diet" The Phi Beta Kappa visiting lecturer will be Professor Steve Shapin, professor of the history of science at Harvard University. Professor Shapin will speak on "Expertise, Common-Sense and the Atkins Diet" on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. in the Julie Puett Howry Center. In modern societies, lay decisions about what and what not to eat are massively informed by technical expertise, but they also are informed by common-sense and by moral considerations. Shapin will talk about some aspects of the contemporary debates over eating right in order to illuminate endemic problems of expertise in modern democracies. A reception will follow the talk.
