November 17, 2000

Suzanne Chamier, professor of French, presented papers on the contemporary French writer, Charles Juliet, at the South Central Modern Language Association in San Antonio, in November, titled "Silence and Speculation: Teaching Autobiographical Fiction," and at the Kentucky Foreign Language Conference in Lexington, in April, titled "Figuring the Maternal in 'Lambeaux.'"


Peter Gottschalk, assistant professor of religion and philosophy, will present a paper at the American Academy of Religion in Nashville titled "Mahatma in Memory: Gandhi in Myth, History, and Group Memory." He will then travel to India to do fieldwork with his collaborator Mathew Schmalz from the College of the Holy Cross for their web site, "A Virtual Village." He looks forward to returning to the Southwestern community in January.


Eric Selbin, associate professor of political science, gave a talk titled "Resistance, Rebellion, and Revolution in the Real World: Understanding the Struggle for a More Just Society in the Developing World" at Emory University. Sponsored by the Institute for Comparative and International Studies and the Hightower Lecture Fund, Selbin's talk was part of their Development Studies Speaker Series.


Kiyoshi Tamagawa, associate professor of music, has had an article, "The Violin Sonatas of G. F. Handel: A Modern Approach to Study and Performance," accepted for publication by the "American String Teacher," the official journal of the American String Teachers' Association (ASTA).


Patrick Veerkamp, professor of art, has five works on display in an invitational exhibition titled "Diverse Visual Voices" through Dec. 14, in the Fine Arts Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.


November 10, 2000

Sonia Riquelme, associate professor of Spanish, attended the third International Conference of Caribbean Literature, sponsored by the Pontificia Universidad CatÑlica de Puerto Rico. Her paper titled "Mujeres en agonÕa en la narrativa de Mayra Santos" focuses on Black ethnicity and women's identity in the short-stories of Puerto Rican writer Mayra Santos. Professor Riquelme also chaired the session "Narrativa cubana actual." The conference took place at the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico, in early November.


Mary Visser, associate professor of art, will have her panel presentation and paper titled "The Interface: Computers, 3-D Modeling and Women Sculptors" recorded and presented on audio tapes as part of the ISC (International Sculpture Symposium). The ISC regularly produces a selected series of audio tapes on contemporary issues in sculpture for the public.


November 3, 2000

Hal Haskell, professor of Classics, is delivering lectures this week on his research on Greek Bronze Age archaeology. He is speaking at the University of Akron, University of Louisville, and University of Minnesota. The lecture program is sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America.


La Vonne I. Neal, assistant professor of education, was invited by Allyn and Bacon Publishing Company to write a chapter in their forthcoming special education textbook, "Issues in Special Education." This is a graduate-level textbook, and the chapter will focus on cultural diversity and special education.


Francie Larrieu Smith, SU's cross country coach, is helping host a two-day conference/celebration titled "Olympia's Daughter's: A Celebration of Women and Sport" on Nov. 3-4 at the University of Texas at Austin. On Friday afternoon, she will participate in a panel discussion on "Women's Sports and the Future" with Allen Guttmann, president-elect of the North American Society for Sports History, and Jody Conradt, UT's women's basketball coach. On Saturday, Smith will speak at an academic conference along with some of the best people working in the field of sport studies in North America.


Patrick Veerkamp, professor of art, was one of the featured artists in the 8th Annual Texas Clay Festival in Gruene. This invitational event brought together 40 of the top professional potters in the state for a two-day festival. Artists displayed and sold their work, presented demonstrations of their working techniques, and participated in informal discussions related to the art and craft of pottery making.
