Eileen Cleere, assistant professor of English, moderated two panels and
delivered a paper titled "Brown Studies: Painting and Pestilence in
Victorian Fiction" at the International Society for the Study of Narrative
Literature conference in Houston, March 9-12.
Damian Hinojosa, assistant visiting professor in the Department of Modern
Languages, delivered his study titled "El Ars poˇtica de la Bella mujer en
la Poes’a de Cancionero (1370-1450)" at the International Colloquium about
Latin
American and Caribbean Women, which took place at the Casa de las Americas,
Havana, Cuba, Feb. 19-23.
Laura Hobgood-Oster, assistant professor of religion and philosophy,
presented a paper titled "Kant as Cultural Thinker: The Womanist Turn on
Kant's Theory of Race" at the Southwest Commission on Religious Studies
Annual Meeting in Dallas, March 17-18.
Edward L. Kain, professor of sociology and anthropology, University
Scholar, and Brown Distinguished Teaching Professor, had a book chapter
titled "Family" published in "Social Problems: A Case Study Approach"
edited by Norman A. Dolch and Linda Deutschmann (General Hall, 2001).
La Vonne I. Neal, assistant professor of education, had a paper titled
"African American Women's Decisions to Become Teachers: Sociocultural
Perspectives" accepted for publication by the International Journal of
Qualitative Studies in Education. Neal described sociocultural and
school-related factors that influenced African American women's perceptions
of teaching and decisions to teach. The study involved life history
interviews of six preservice teachers from Historically Black Colleges and
Universities.
The Southwestern University Opera Theatre took a performing and
recruiting tour to Chicago over Spring Break. There were six separate
performances with a total audience of approximately 1000 individuals.
Performances included music by Monteverdi, Cavalli, Mozart, Puccini, and
Menotti. The SU Opera Theatre, under the direction of Bruce Cain,
assistant professor of music, was accompanied on tour by Kiyoshi Tamagawa, associate professor of music. The rehearsal accompanist was David
Utterback, instructor of music. Plans are being made for an on-campus
performance.

La Vonne I. Neal, assistant professor of education, and Scott T. Bridgest, senior, were "Invited Speakers" at the 53rd Annual Conference of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) in Dallas on Friday, March 2. During their workshop, attended by Deans of Education, they presented their research, the effects of African American movement styles on teachers' perceptions and reactions. They highlighted the need for teacher preparation programs to develop curriculum that helps students become culturally responsive teachers.
Jimmy Smith, associate professor kinesiology, was recently selected to be
the president of the Texas Chapter of The American College of Sports
Medicine. He will serve a one-year term until the next annual meeting of
the chapter, which will be held at Southwestern University in February
2002. The central theme of the meeting will be new perspectives on the
effects of exercise on aging, and will feature lectures by several renowned
researchers in that field.

Mary Hale-Visser, associate professor of art, was invited to give a
workshop for the 2001-A Clay Odyssey workshop series sponsored by the
Sedona Art Center of Sedona, Ariz. This workshop covered techniques and
processes for large-scale mural tile design work. Visser's artwork also
will be on exhibit in the art center gallery with internationally known
artists Don Rietz and Biz Littell from Feb. 14-April 2, 2001.
Eric Selbin, associate professor of political science, had his article
"Resistance, Rebellion, and Revolution in Latin America and the Caribbean
at the Millennium" published in the latest Latin American Research Review,
vol. 36, no. 1 (February 2001).
