Edward L. Kain, professor of sociology, and two alumni, Emily Buchanan '99 and Rob Mack '97, co-authored an article titled "Institutional Research as a Context for Teaching Methodological Skills." It was published in January's issue of the journal "Teaching Sociology." This paper is a result of student/faculty collaborative research. The fall, 1996 Sociological Research Methods class analyzed data for the 1996 Southwestern University Alumni Survey, sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations. While still students, Emily and Rob worked with Professor Kain to write a paper that was presented at a national professional meeting in 1998. The paper was subsequently revised and resulted in this journal article.
Kenneth Sheppard, professor of music, has been named as the new Artistic
Director for Chorus Austin. He will conduct the Austin Civic Chorus, the
Austin Vocal Arts Ensemble and the Orchestra of Saint David's; and will
coordinate the Texas Bach Festival. Sheppard's first concert with the two
choral ensembles is titled "Fire of the American Spirit," a concert of
American music including works by Copland, Bernstein, Barber and Dello
Joio. In May, the Austin Civic Chorus will join the Austin Symphony in two
performances of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana."

Laura Hobgood-Oster, assistant professor of religion and philosophy, has
been named to the editorial board for the "Encyclopedia of Religion and
Nature." She will be the coordinator for the Gender and Nature/Ecofeminism
Task Force. The encyclopedia is forthcoming from Cassel and Continuum
Press, 2002.
Ken Roberts, professor of economics and business, has had a paper accepted
for a publication in the "International Migration Review" based upon his
on-going research on migration and gender in China. The paper is titled
"Female Migrants to Shanghai: Temporary 'Floaters' or Potential Settlers?"
Cameron Sawyer, assistant professor of mathematics, organized and
moderated a panel discussion on "Undergraduate Research" and presented her
paper "A Calculus Lab Component Adapted from the MAA Resources for Calculus
Collection" at January's Joint Meeting of the American Mathematics Society
and the Mathematics Association of America, in New Orleans.

Eileen Cleere, assistant professor of English, presented her paper
"Sanitizing Sublimity: Romantic Art, Victorian Dirt" at the December
meeting of the Modern Language Association in Washington, D.C.
Lois Ferrari, associate professor of music, will conduct Donald Grantham's
"Kentucky Harmony" at the 2001 College Band Directors National Association
conference, to be held at the University of North Texas in February. She
also is co-chair of the Small College Intercollegiate Band which
will perform at the conference. First-Year music major and euphonium
player, Johnathan Kana, has been selected to perform in this ensemble. In
addition, Ferrari's flute student, Michelle Thibodeau, a sophomore music
major, was selected for the second consecutive year to perform at Carnegie
Hall (New York City) with the National Wind Ensemble, directed by renowned
conductor H. Robert Reynolds.
Francie Larrieu Smith, head men's and women's cross country coach, received
her Master's in sports administration from the University of Texas at Austin, in December.
