February 24, 2005

Alicia L. Moore, assistant professor of education, was selected to receive the first annual Helen McConico Young Alumni Service Award for outstanding service to the Huston-Tillotson College community. The award was named in honor of Helen McConico, a 1969 Huston-Tillotson College alumna who, before her passing in 2004, worked tirelessly to serve the college through her leadership as the President of the H-TC International Alumni Association. Moore was honored on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, during the college's annual homecoming festivities.


La Vonne I. Neal, associate professor of education, will be a Visting Scholar at The College of New Jersey, March 21-April 1, 2005. She will lecture in classes in three departments: education, communication and African American studies. In addition, she will present her research on culturally responsive teaching in urban schools, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, to officials at the New Jersey State Department of Education.


Jesse Purdy, professor of psychology, published "Promoting the Purpose and Mission of Psi Chi through Undergraduate Research" in the Winter 2005 issue of "Eye on Psi Chi," a publication of the National Honor Society in psychology.


February 17, 2005

Alisa Gaunder, assistant professor of political science, and the following Southwestern students: Christopher Bailey, Tyson Berger, Sarah Morris, Lissa Terrel and Grace Webster, have received an ASIANetwork Freeman Student-Faculty Grant to do collaborative research in Tokyo, Japan this summer. The research team will travel to Tokyo for three weeks in May to research the political leadership of prime ministers, party leaders, prominent women politicians and individual political activists.


February 11, 2005

Cameron Sawyer, assistant professor of mathematics, and Michael Kamen, associate professor of education, co-presented "Developing a Math Capstone Course for Pre-service Secondary Teachers" at the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators Annual Conference in Dallas. They also co-facilitated a discussion on "Developing and Maintaining Partnerships Between Mathematicians and Mathematics Educators" with Pickreign, Howard and Rogers of SUNY Fredonia.

Eric Selbin, professor of political science, had his article "Elites, Intellectuals, and Revolutionary Leadership" accepted for the forthcoming "Encyclopedia of Modern Revolutions."
