At the annual meetings of the American Sociological Association, held in New York City Aug. 11-14, Maria Lowe, associate professor of sociology presided over a roundtable titled “Free Space, Between Camps, and Another Public Sphere.” She also presented a paper titled “Sowing the Seeds of Discontent: Tougaloo College’s Social Science forums as a Prefigurative Movement Free Space, 1952-1964.” In addition, Lowe served on the Advisory Board for the ASA Honors Program.

At the same meetings in New York, Edward L. Kain, professor of sociology and University Scholar, received the ASA Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching. Kain also helped in the orientation of Honors Program Students, co-led three workshops and participated on a panel. The workshops were on the topics: “Information Literacy: The Partnership of Sociology Faculty and Social Science Librarians”, “Models of Joint Sociology-Anthropology Programs,” and “Applying for a Faculty Position in a Teaching-Oriented Institution.” The panel, titled “Best Practices: Award-Winning Teachers Talk about Teaching,” was part of a full day pre-conference workshop for sociology.


Barbara Boucher Owens, associate professor of computer science, was recently elected to a three-year term as the chair of the Association of Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group in Computer Science Education (SIGCSE). Prior to her election, Owens had served as an elected member of the SIGCSE board for four years and as its vice chair for six years.

Aaron Prevots, assistant professor of French, had his article "Fragile Signs of Hope in Yves Bonnefoy, Philippe Jaccottet and Jacques Réda" accepted for publication in the fall 2007 issue of Pacific Coast Philology, the scholarly journal of the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association. The essay addresses ubiquitous aspects of everyday life such as light and warmth and their relevance to contemporary poetry.


BioScience, a national peer-reviewed journal for all biological disciplines, published a book review on a population ecology textbook by Romi Burks, assistant professor of biology. The American Biology Teacher has also published a pedagogical paper by Burks and previous visiting faculty member, Larry Boles, on using chocolate bars and candies to teach principles of evolution and phylogeny. "Evolution of the chocolate bar" appeared in the April issue of ABT.


George Oldziey, instructor of music, prepared the score for the documentary film "Team Everest: a Himalayan Journey," which premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival May 26.


Michael Cooper, associate professor of music, was awarded the Warren D. Allen Faculty Citation for Excellence in Scholarship by the Florida State University College of Music. In addition, the Florida State University Musicology faculty named Cooper as the Curtis Mayes Orpheus Chair holder for 2007-2008. Both awards entail a visit to FSU, which will take place this fall.
