ACS INITIATIVE
Southwestern University is initiating its Environmental Studies Program at a particularly exciting time. The consortium to which we belong, the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS), is in the midst of implementing an environmental initiative for its member institutions. This support has allowed SU to take bolder and more daring steps in developing our Environmental Studies Program, and has provided monies for a number of interesting projects.
Associated Colleges of the South Environmental Initiative: Environmental Citizenship for the 21st Century
In its own words,
"This initiative is designed to foster collaboration in environmental studies and activities among faculty, staff and students at the fifteen member institutions of the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS). The program encompasses collaborative efforts in course development, collaborative research, campus outreach and service and on-campus service operations."
ACS-affiliated activities on the SU Campus
Southwestern faculty members Drs. Hobgood-Oster, Johnson and Niemeyer participated in an ACS conference on Sustainability and the Liberal Arts at Hendrix College in October of 1998, which spurred them to develop the campus ecological audit conducted by Southwestern students in the Spring of 1999.
Under ACS Environmental Initiative sponsorship, Dr. Niemeyer attended a Project Kaleidoscope conference at Brown University in the summer of 1999 where she shared the details of Southwestern's new Environmental Studies program with faculty from a wide variety of universities and colleges, and came back to Southwestern bursting with ideas of how S.U.'s Environmental Studies program can move forward.
With the support of the ACS Environmental Initiative and our University Administrations' commitment to its goals, the Environmental Studies committee at Southwestern hopes to be actively involved in shaping Southwestern's future
The ACS Environmental Initiative maintains a faculty and student fellow at each member institution. Southwestern's faculty fellow for 1999-2000 is Dr. Laura Hobgood-Oster, the student fellow is Jason Hercules. Direct any questions you have about Southwestern's connections to this initiative to either of these fellows.
The ACS Environmental Initiative has also sponsored two environmentally oriented internships that SU students participated in.
