William Carrington Finch Professor
Dr. Hilliard grew up in Waco (like C. Wright Mills) and received his undergraduate education at Rice University, where he was initially an architecture student. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin, where he developed his initial interests in medical sociology and the sociology of sport, the fields he has worked in for over thirty years. Dr. Hilliard came to Southwestern in 1974, and the 2007-2008 academic year will be his thirty-fourth and final year in higher education. He will complete a three-year term as a Paideia Professor and will offer a special topics course “Visions of a Good Society.” Upon retirement, he plans to maintain his twin passions for bass (largemouth, smallmouth, and Guadalupe in local lakes and streams) and bass (guitar, with SALT and The Post Hole Diggers).
