Cristina Alcalde is an anthropologist whose work focuses on gender, class, ethnicity, violence, and Latin America. A native of Lima, Peru, Dr. Alcalde has strong family and research ties to Peru.
Dr. Alcalde has a Ph.D. in Anthropology and an M.A. in Latin American Studies from Indiana University, Bloomington. During 2000-2001, she spent sixteen months in Lima, Peru. Her fieldwork in Lima explored battered women’s strategies for surviving, and sometimes ending, abusive relationships amidst poverty, discrimination, and social violence. Dr. Alcalde’s research interests also include Latinos in the U.S. and Latinas’ experiences of intimate partner violence. She is especially interested in forging connections between academic and community work on domestic violence. Dr. Alcalde’s current projects include turning her dissertation into a book, tentatively titled “Más me pegas, más te quiero?" Gender Violence, Poverty, and Resistance in Women’s Lives in Peru and completing articles based on her fieldwork materials and ongoing research.
When she is not teaching or in her office, Dr. Alcalde enjoys spending time with her son, Santiago, and her spouse, Joe O’Neil, who teaches German. She also enjoys traveling, trying different foods from around the world and reading.
