Graduate
Kent Williams, graduate
Class of '04
Major: Art History
Minor: Greek
(from SU Magazine 2004)
Kent Williams’ introduction
to archaeological fieldwork would have been a rare opportunity for any
undergraduate student. But considering Southwestern doesn’t offer
an archeology major, doing graduate level work at the Hacimusalar Project
in Turkey might have seemed overwhelming. “It was a rewarding experience.
It’s amazing the amount of information that we can derive about
a culture from the artifacts left behind.”
Williams
assisted Hal Haskell, professor and chair of the Classics Area, in sorting,
registering and cataloguing pottery that was thousands of years old. It’s
exactly what Williams hoped for when he gave up a golf scholarship to
transfer from St. Edward’s, following his cousin and great uncle,
who are Southwestern alumni. He only carries a minor in the subject, but
in his senior year Williams was named merit award recipient in art history.
He hopes to find a museum staff position until he decides on a graduate
program in archeology. “I’d like to earn a Ph.D. and then
split time teaching and working in the field.”
