Classics ProgramWelcome to the Classics
Program. Classics students delve into to the literature and language,
anthropology, art history, religion, philosophy, and history of Greco-Roman
antiquity from the very earliest periods (prehistory) to the dissolution
of the Roman Empire.
Courses in Classics include language and literature courses in Greek, Latin, and classics in translation. Students can major in Classics (includes study of Greek, Latin, and Classics in translation), Greek, and Latin, and minor in Greek and Latin. You can study abroad in Italy (Rome or Catania), Greece (Athens), and Turkey (Istanbul and Ankara). Through Sunoikisis, an innovative national inter-institutional Classics program, we have access to a huge range of subject material and faculty. Using cutting edge technology, our students and faculty work with colleagues at national peer insitutions on text, iconography, epigraphy, pottery, et al. in a far richer way than is possible on any single campus alone. A recent Latin major, now working for a major accounting firm, reports that Sunoikisis prepared him well to collaborate with co-workers located in distant offices. The Classics Program prepares students for a variety of careers. While some of our students go on in Classics, professional schools and business schools recognize that Classics is a rigorous major that provides a great intellectual foundation for work in any field.
