How to Install Your Web Page

* In order to get your web page "online" and accessible to the rest of the world, you need to install it onto Southwestern's server.

* There is a program, /usr/local/bin/wwwsetup, that will create the directory and change the permissions as needed. Most people need only type wwwsetup at the ralph command prompt to run it.

* The directory where the web pages MUST reside is

/home/_loginname_/public_html

(or a subdirectory thereof) which is created by wwwsetup. The main page must be called index.html. All html pages must have the suffix .html, and images must be either .gif or.jpeg. [No cgi-bin programs can be run from inside personal web sites.]

* The student's URL will be

http://www.southwestern.edu/~_loginname_

* Copy pages from a personal computer using WS-FTP (PC) or Fetch (Mac) to

/home/_loginname_/public_html.

* All files must have permission in order to be read and understood by the server. Thus, after the file is put into the public_html directory, it is important to type the following command at the ralph prompt

publish

(to make every file in the directory readable by the web server)
